RÚV Series Explores Mysterious Death of Drag Icon Heklína

The half-Icelandic drag performer Heklína was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a London apartment on April 3, 2023. British police continue to investigate the case, but have faced criticism for delays and alleged prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community. The cause of death remains unknown.

Heklína, born Steven Grygelko in 1967 to an Icelandic mother and American father, was 55 at the time of death and spent part of their childhood in Iceland before becoming internationally known as one of the most influential drag queens in the United States.

In RÚV’s documentary series Þetta helst, singer Páll Óskar reflects on his friendship with Steven, which began in the late 1980s before they took on the stage name Heklína. “She was a pioneer, not only in drag but in creating a space for queer culture that changed the lives of many,” he said.

Heklína’s passing was mourned across the world, with tributes from fans, fellow performers, and artists who saw her as a trailblazer. Her legacy continues to influence new generations of drag performers both in the U.S. and internationally.
