Norðurþing Municipality has signed a new waste management contract with Terra, covering household and institutional waste collection in Húsavík and Reykjahverfi, as well as the operation of recycling points and the reception center. The agreement takes effect on October 1.
Three companies submitted bids, with Terra selected as the lowest bidder at 105.7% of the cost estimate. Other bids came from Íslenska Gámafélagið (137.5%) and Kubbur (120.9%).
The contract comes as new national waste legislation is being fully implemented in Norðurþing. The laws require municipalities to run waste services without subsidies from other budget areas. Fees will now consist of a fixed base charge for all households and a variable fee depending on the level of service requested. This means homeowners who opt for more extensive service will pay more, while residents in multi-unit housing can share containers and reduce costs.
Businesses will continue to contract directly with service providers, and summer cottages will still have access to nearby collection points and a clip card system for the reception center.
Arrangements for waste services east of Tjörneshreppur are still being finalized, with negotiations expected in the coming months.
