National High School Singing Contest Held in Húsavík for the First Time

The National High School Singing Contest (Söngkeppni framhaldsskólanna) takes place in Húsavík tonight, for the very first time here in town, and will be broadcast live on RÚV across Iceland. This is the 32nd edition of the contest, with contestants from 23 schools performing for a nationwide audience.

The jury this year includes Oddur Bjarni Þorkelsson, priest and member of Ljótu hálfvitarnir, Eurovision star and violinist Greta Salóme, and Stefán Jakobsson, singer of the band Dimma and a former contestant in the competition.

Hjördís Óskarsdóttir represents the local school of Húsavík with Runnin’. Tonight’s highlights included soul, ballads, and Eurovision favorites, showcasing the diverse talents of students from all corners of the country.

In addition to the competing acts, the evening will feature special entertainment segments, adding to the celebratory atmosphere in Húsavík’s sports hall, which was filled with cheering students, families, and visitors. Each shool’s act will be presented by music stars who was a student, and in some cases competed for their school in the contest in their younger years, including Eurovision stars Páll Óskar and Húsavík’s own Birgitta Haukdal.

The event marked an important cultural milestone for Húsavík, bringing one of Iceland’s most popular student competitions to the town for the first time, and further cementing its reputation as a vibrant cultural hub in the north.
