The National High School Singing Contest ended in victory for Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands (FSu) last night in Húsavík. Emilía Hugrún Lárusdóttir, together with the school band of FSu, delivered a powerful performance of Etta James’ classic I’d Rather Go Blind, earning them the top spot in the 2022 competition.
Second place went to Rakel Björgvins of Menntaskólinn í Tónlist with her moving rendition of No Time to Die, while Þorsteinn from Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja took third with his original song 70mph. In total, 23 schools from across Iceland competed, making this one of the most diverse and wide-reaching editions of the contest yet.
The event was broadcast live on RÚV. The evening featured not only strong performances from across the country but also entertainment segments and a buzzing crowd that filled the sports hall.
“This was a thrill to produce and an unforgettable night,” said Orly Orlyson, producer of the contest. “It was especially meaningful to bring this big national event to my hometown of Húsavík, following our Eurovision adventures over the last two years. The energy from the students, the music, and the audience made it a truly special occasion.”
With Emilía Hugrún and the FSu band now crowned winners, the 32nd edition of the competition will be remembered not only for its high level of talent but also for introducing the contest to Húsavík for the very first time.
