The Children’s Culture Festival Framtíðin er okkar (The Future is Ours) is now underway in Húsavík, running from September 12 to 19 with workshops and events across town.
On Friday morning, local youth took part in a Future Meeting, where they discussed future job opportunities, community needs, and the skills that will be important in building a diverse society in their hometown. The session encouraged teenagers to reflect on questions such as: What does young people want? What jobs should exist in our community? What skills are important for the future?
The festival was formally opened with a Future Party at Safnahúsið on Friday afternoon. Organized by Hagsmunasamtök barna and STEM Húsavík in collaboration with local institutions, the festival also invites children to imagine and design the future of Húsavík itself. Throughout the week, workshops will address questions like: How will Húsavík look in the future? What changes do we want to see? What should we protect? What makes a good society?
The results of the workshops will be presented in Safnahúsið the following week, giving the community a chance to see how the youngest residents of Húsavík envision their future.
