Húsavík joins European Week of Sport for the first time

The European Week of Sport begins this week, running from September 23–30 across more than 30 countries. In Iceland, the initiative is coordinated by the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland with support from the European Union.

The campaign, now in its 10th year, aims to promote sports and daily physical activity under the slogan #BeActive. Its mission is to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to move more, combatting the rise of sedentary lifestyles across Europe.

This year marks the first time that Norðurþing municipality is participating. A wide range of local clubs, organizations, and individuals have joined forces to create a diverse program for residents, ensuring that everyone can find something to try.

Highlights of the week in Húsavík include two public lectures:

  • On Tuesday, September 23, Bjartur Guðmundsson will deliver a short motivational workshop titled “Unstoppable in Peak Emotional State” at Borgarhólsskóli at 17:30.
  • On Thursday, September 25, Sveinn Þorgeirsson will give a talk, “Having Children in Sports”, at the Upper Secondary School in Húsavík at 17:00, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of supporting young athletes.

Local sports club Völsungur is also opening its training sessions to all children free of charge during the week.

Mayor Katrín Sigurjónsdóttir is adding her own contribution to the program, leading a morning walk from Kvíabekkur in Húsavík on Thursday at 06:30, as well as a lunchtime walk in Raufarhöfn on Monday, September 29, starting at 12:00 from Breiðablik. “It would be great if people join in – dogs on a leash are welcome too,” she said.

Residents are encouraged to review the full schedule, take advantage of the many opportunities to get moving, and inspire each other to be more active this week.
